Book Review: Ms. Mulligan and the Enchanted Ice Cream

by Allison

Tabby Easterland is having a sleepover with her two best friend’s on the eve of her twelfth birthday. The next morning, she wakes up not as a 12-year-old, but a full-grown woman. After determining the woman is in fact Tabby, her friends, the tenacious Kat and southern belle Dolly, set out to solve the mystery of Tabby’s sudden transformation.

In her new body, Tabby becomes Ms. Mulligan and takes a job teaching English at her own school. The friends embark on a journey that will uncover truths about Tabby’s father and a pair of evil sisters determined to complete their sinister curse.

Since this was an upper elementary/middle grades novel, I recruited my 9-year-old daughter to read this with me. It was a little more substantial than what she usually reads, but it was perfect for us to read together. It was fun, entertaining, and moved pretty quickly; all requirements for a 9-year-old audience.

“It’s fun, intriguing, and mysterious. It’s really good to get you into reading chapter books. It’s a book that everyone will like. It’s a book for all ages and really good to read with someone, like I read with my mom.” – Lilly, 9

If you’re thinking this plot sounds familiar, you’re right. Big, 13 Going on 30, Freaky Friday; it’s definitely been done before. But with some fantasy elements and detective sleuthing thrown in for good measure, this story is set apart from the others.

It also has a cast of over-the-top characters that made us laugh out loud.

I thought it was cute as a button. My daughter thought it was “intriguing and mysterious” (she pulled out the big words just for you guys!).

Overall, it was a great story and I enjoyed the chance to connect with my girl over books. We laughed, we almost cried, and then we ate ice cream!

About Ms. Mulligan and the Enchanted Ice Cream

Tabby Easterland wakes on her twelfth birthday to find herself magically transformed into the twenty-five-year-old “Ms. Mulligan,” an event witnessed only by her young friends – the platinum-haired southern belle Dolly Hargrave and the hard-boiled urban detective wannabe Kat Dorsett. Hiding her true identity, Ms. Mulligan becomes a teacher at her own school, where a desperate search for answers lead the girls to seek out Tabby’s long-lost father, discover an ancient mystical society, and fight the evil Black and White Sisters–witches determined to complete a long-planned curse upon Tabby. In a race against time, will love be enough to overcome the crippling curse and restore Tabby to her former self?
