This domestic thriller is exactly the kind of messy, addictive read that reminds me why I love the genre so much.
The Summary
A picture-perfect couple’s sordid past threatens to rock a sleepy Southern town down to its core.
Told in alternating timelines, this multi-POV thriller explores toxic masculinity, gender-based violence, and female rage in the tradition of Darby Kane.
Childhood sweethearts Rhett and Lucinda seem to have the perfect marriage, the child they always wanted, and even the white picket fence. But fifteen years ago, the couple came very close to losing everything. When outsider Jennifer Moore arrived in their tight-knit Kentucky town, a brief but explosive affair between the newcomer and the soon-to-be-married Rhett stirred up a violent storm of betrayal that ended with a dead body and a mystery riddled with corruption and deception.
Now, new evidence has surfaced—including an eyewitness who places Rhett at the scene of the brutal crime. Soon the carefully constructed life Rhett and Lucinda built starts to crumble—and the truth waiting beneath the surface could destroy them both.
In a town steeped in deadly Southern charm, secrets don’t fade—they fester.
From the authors of The Lake of Lost Girls comes a chilling domestic suspense that will leave you desperate to uncover the truth.
My Review
Tropes:
- Dual timelines
- Multiple POVs
- Short chapters
- Fast paced
- Domestic thriller
- Female rage
Set in a small town where secrets run deep and everyone seems to be hiding something, the story dives into themes of toxic masculinity, female rage, and abusive relationships with a sharp, unflinching edge. The atmosphere is tense from the start, and there’s this constant undercurrent of unease that makes even the quieter moments feel loaded with meaning.
The short chapters make it incredibly easy to fly through, while the multiple POVs give you a layered, sometimes conflicting view of what’s really going on. The dual timeline is especially effective, slowly peeling back the past while the present-day narrative builds momentum. The way those timelines begin to intertwine is one of the strongest aspects of the book, revealing new pieces of the truth at just the right moments to keep you hooked. It’s very much a “just one more chapter” kind of read that quickly turns into finishing the book in one sitting.
The plot itself is packed with secrets, complicated relationships, and mounting tension. As the story unfolds, each revelation adds another layer, shifting your understanding of the characters and their motivations. While a few of the twists felt somewhat predictable, the book still manages to deliver enough surprises to keep things engaging. More importantly, the final unraveling feels satisfying, with the emotional and narrative threads coming together in a way that feels earned.
The characters are…honestly terrible—but in the best possible way. They’re messy, morally gray, and often frustrating, but that’s what makes them so compelling. No one feels entirely trustworthy, and watching their relationships collide and unravel is part of what makes the story so hard to put down. The exploration of toxic dynamics, particularly in romantic and small-town social settings, adds an extra layer of depth that elevates the story beyond a standard thriller.
That said, there are moments where the pacing and twists lean slightly into the familiar, and readers who are well-versed in domestic suspense may be able to anticipate certain reveals. Still, the execution, atmosphere, and character work keep it from feeling stale.
Overall, this is a fast-paced, tension-filled thriller that thrives on its messy character dynamics and slow-burn reveals. If you’re drawn to stories with dual timelines, multiple perspectives, morally complex characters, and plenty of small-town drama, this is definitely one to add to your list.
